You may want to point out the MST blog with your math & science lesson as something to follow this project (see post below & part 2 from link) would be a great one to share
KHQuotes:
Wendy Smith's plan for k-5 environmental science
Goal #1: Our most important initiative is to shift instructional practices in our school to become constructivist in nature using inquiry-based methods. Both problem and project-based experiences will be the foundation for long-term student-driven investigations centered on living environment concepts. All teachers and students should be involved in real issues that require creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving to generate possible solutions and share findings and learning experiences with stakeholders.
Goal #2: Our second initiative is to increase the use of technology to facilitate learning for both teachers and students. We believe that technology (goal #2) must serve pedagogy (goal #1). We believe the infusion of technology must enable teachers and students to research, create, communicate, and collaborate. This initiative will create the transformative process we are seeking in technology infusion for our teachers and students.

Hi guys...still rooting through resources & contacts from NECC--
Wendy is someone I know from NY who works as an MST Specialist and who's role is to improve K-5 student performance in the areas of science and math using various technology tools embedded into instruction. She recently wrote about some of the things they are planning for next year
(read post below and then part 2 link on the left sidebar where she outlines the plan. They did a poster session at NECC that outlined some of the amazing things they are doing. I would be happy to make a connection! Would love to see UM involvedQuotes:

Hi all
Don't know if you have seen this site
You click on the go...and you have 60 seconds to write about the word given
Kids to need to put name and email (I would encourage 1st names only)
or their entry will be deleted when they click *submit*.
but the site ensures. . .
your email will not be visible on the site.
oneword will never spam you—we love you.
Once they are done they can click on READ in the top left corner to see what everyone else has written
ENJOY

FROM THE ABOUT PAGE...
the real purpose of this exercise is to alleviate
our natural tendency to edit everything—and learn
to flow.
an analogy would be a film camera:
when a film is shot, the camera just rolls and captures
everything—good and bad. when all the shooting is
complete, the raw film is edited into a cohesive piece.
the camera operator doesn't keep stopping the camera and
rewinding and editing on-the-fly—the camera just rolls.
if it were to stop, some of the best performances
and spontaneous moments might be missed.
so:
be the camera. well, that's a stupid saying, but
you get the idea. in writing—just flow. go back later
and edit.
Go write.

Education Week's Digital Directions: Building Gaming Into Science Education
Article from Digital Directions about using games for learning science
(floating sticky note)
- Is this limited to only the River City Project alone though? How does it promote more inquiry, problem and project-based learning in other content? comment by Brian C. Smith
- "I've had teachers tell me,” says Eklund, “that after they introduced the game to their students, the classroom went completely silent because all of the kids were just reading."
"You just don't get that kind of engagement and involvement with the story" with a textbook, he says.
- Is this because of the visual appeal or the storyline?
I can see this happening, but does silence mean high levels of engagement? comment by Brian C. Smith- Assuming that they are not sleeping I think it does mean engagement, but engagement does not equal education. It depends on the content as well. comment by Dean Loberg
A report written by researchers about The River City Project for a 2006 conference concluded "that students learned biology content, that students and teachers were highly engaged, that student attendance improved, that disruptive behavior dropped, that students were building 21st-century skills in virtual communication and expression, and importantly, that using this type of technology in the classroom can facilitate good inquiry learning."- "I'm in a unique situation where there's a computer at every lab table," he says, pointing out that many teachers do not have that ratio of students to computers.
- when the games don't work properly, but most teachers don’t have that level of technical skill, she points out.
- "There are little things you need to know," she says, to keep the games running smoothly. "[Otherwise], it's not going to work in the classroom, and teachers aren't going to use it."
- "If [the game] doesn't have a focus or clear reason for what they're doing, it really doesn't work," says Pokrzywinski. Adapting games to the curriculum is possible, she says, but it takes time—something many teachers don't have.

Hi all
I know that some of you have asked about creating timelines, I found a great new site called dipty http://www.dipty.com where the kids can create a collaborative timeline. A student created sample of The Civil Rights Movement is included in this email. You can view as a timeline, a flipview, map view...lots of ideas. Thought I would pass it along.
See you tomorrow either before or after school for our meeting.

Hey guys
Saw this site through a blog I read. As he said, you may not agree with the content in every documentary, but you don't have to, right? There are dozens of full length documentaries with accopanying trailers. They're arranged by catogory on the right side making it easy to find just what you're looking for. I clicked on slavery and Invisible Children was there...Let me know if you find it useful

Drape's Takes: Edublogger Etiquette - Twitter & Self-Promotion
(floating sticky note)
- what are your thoughts comment by Kristin Hokanson
- At its best, Twitter is a place to share a resource, a link to a new blog post, or an insight, and even a place to have a little fun. It’s a place that could be about learning. At its very worst, Twitter is a self-indulgent exercise in self-promotion and pettiness.Right now, I think we are watching Twitter change right before our digital eyes. Be the first with the tool (Diigo, for example), be the first with a post, be the first with the wiki, be the first to uStream, stake your claim in a never-ending game of name building and recognition. Take advantage of the commons, go ahead.

ok so maybe this is a dumb question, but how do I create a PUBLIC highlight. When I highlight it shows as private and I seem to only be able to add a sticky note / comment for a group, not for diigo users...what am I missing????
